The three keys of Dells success are reducing the number of touches, providing close shipping to its U.S. buyers, and the ability to provide a computer with endless configurations. The main reason that Dell is successful in its supply chain management is that each time a computer is “touched’ it makes for a more costly stage in development. They would like to limit the time and portion of the whole chain so that it is as streamlined as possible. It provides a similar setup as Japanese auto makers. Providing close ties with U.S. customers and operations, the company is able to provide solutions and resolutions to customers as fast/cheap as possible. Nearby shipping and packing companies help Dell provide quick turn around time for shipping. Lastly, Dell is able to provide many configurations of PC’s. One of Dells head executives states that there can be as many as “100 million” different configurations.
