Outsourced Programmers
I feel that if there is a higher error rate offshore and that there is less error checking and debugging information, the cost associated to outsourcing can be substantially more then the US companies. I don’t think organizations know on how much time is spent after code is produced to fix it. Overall, we also do not know the rates for Indian programmers vs. American programmers and to really get a cost analysis figure that we would hope for. Also, the amount of time in specifics is never given with good reviews. I personally have worked extensively with Indian programmers. I recall that they would take at least 3-4 times longer then American companies. Also, when we did receive code from India, it was very hard to read (to do personal error checking). Lastly, the code that we received did not use complex and variable ways of programming to look at the cost effect on machine time for processing of code. I recall a piece of code that many if/else statements when the programmer should have clearly used an array and taken care of it. The size of the code and execution time was average to bad, in my opinion. I think there is a ghost cost associated with outsourcing programming work that companies are not aware of or become aware of it when it is too late.
