I know, some people may tell me “well, I have insurance already” but to future my information about job loss it is imperative to have a backup for health care. Its the biggest bills to pay when you don’t have insurance and can lead anyone in a mid level to low level income to have financial hardships otherwise. Make sure that you develop a sense of reasoning when you brace yourself for it (when it occurs) and get yourself individual health insurance asap. Its necessary and important!

I know…..I am referring to something that many of us fear the most. It is our lifestyle and basic necessities that ensure that we have a job to go to. Here is the problem….We are in an economic stress and the ones feeling it the most (as they normally do) are your subordinates (or if you are on the low end of the stick YOU!). What should you do? I think that people are less proactive when they have a job and go into emergency mode when they lose it. You should ensure that your resume is up to date. It doesn’t hurt if you are open with your managers about downsizing or possible layoffs and let them know that you are worried about the economy and is there something coming down. You will be surprised as your immediate managers may also have it in mind and could have an idea. Keep yourself open and honest and you will know when it is time to “get the boot” but you will be ready for it!

I know that many of my posts have been for the high end consumers and I have said very little to help someone who wants to be a manager. Here are three great tips from me to help you grow into a leadership position. First, you want to ensure that you are doing your own job well. This means give 110 percent into what you are doing and be proud of it. Secondly, know the criteria of management at your workplace and start to fit your concern with your manager about how you would like to someday be a manager. Third, be proactive in your work and if there is anything that you see that could benefit your team as a whole, talk to your manager about it and see if it is acceptable. These tips will help you push from just a worker bee to the bee trying to make a difference!

Lets look at the three main reasons why businesses fail their first year. Many people have a common situation but they fail to realize how much importance to place on these three particular concerns when they first start a business. This should be on the top three of your priority list. If you are able to meet these needs than providing the service or product that you do most likely will lead to a successful business.

Lack of a central idea- This would include having a particular focus and building goals (they come around many times don’t they?). Goal development and accomplishment is vital for a growing organization. You want to make sure that you have a clear AND concise mission statement that fully develops and harnesses your goals.

Not enough cash flow- you want to make sure that almost very LITTLE businesses will turn a profit in their first year. In fact, the average is 3-5 years before any business will turn a legitimate profit. You want to take that into consideration and even manage your finances to ensure that you are able to be stable through the first three year period. In order to do so, you want to make sure your products is efficient and what you want to portray. Its a good idea for multiple products to use the same resources and that way you are maximizing your profits. You will end up all over the place if you don’t follow #1 through.

Personnel Problems- Many small organizations can have a tough time developing both a clientele and employees. Starting off with a complex employee plan is not necessary but knowing what you want to do is key. Make sure that things are black and white and address concerns as they come up. Each company is different and providing different regulations can ensure that you keep a statistic approach to development, training, and mentoring.

Planning and making sure that your goals are met. Specifically, this can be a macro state of planning “future goals” and how to address them or micro planning “which is planning your day to day/monthly/ etc activities

Developing ways to make a complete and successful use of your resources. This is by far one of the toughest things a manager can do. To completely utilize all assets to the best of his or her ability

Motivating your subordinates. This means you should be able to lead by example, develop concrete relationships, and ensure that your team is successful. Remember the little rule that if they are not successful neither are you

Monitoring and developing your team to ensure that they are on track and successful. if they are unable to meet their tasks, you must ensure that they do so. This is in part related to bullet #3

So I have talked about all kinds of managerial concerns and information but I forgot to go over the basics. Specifically, what is management? Management is the ability for an individual or group towards accomplishing a goal in specific frame. The ability to finish a project within a certain time frame is essential for any manager. You are also looking to complete your goal within your frame of reference. Which means you should ensure that you complete goals with your given resources. This is a concern for many managers because they can finish a project but time and diligence can mean the difference between a good manager and a great manager. To the organization, that means quiet a bit more capital and at the end a lower return on investment (which we all know is the staple of projects).

A. Basic outlook is necessary because a negative outlook can severely impact the mindset of a leader who will inevitably fail due to poor outlook
B. Creativity is required for “out of the box” approach to management. In many situations, it can provide the necessary change to be successful as long as it is implemented realistically
C. Understanding strengths and weaknesses is vital for a leader who is looking to solidify the best practice approach of solving a problem. This increases in importance in a team environment.
D. Interpersonal needs are vital in any situation as a leader. The ability to communicate and effectively develop relationships is necessary for the success of any project. This also increases in importance in a team setting.
E. Reasoning is an important factor of management as it provides individuals the assurance of making sound decisions. It is imperative that leaders have the ability to reason for any decision as adversely reasoned decisions may backfire. This also provides the leader the ability to think logically in a creative setting

I was recently talking to a manager outside of my organization and they said some shocking things that made me believe that they did not know how to be a manager. I think any organization that hires from within can attest the complications of management. My biggest concern would be my customers. As a manager, your customers are your staff. They deal with the customers day to day but it is your job as a manager to ensure that they can succeed in their work. If they are unable to do so then you have not done your job as a manager. In the light of aggressive sales maneuvers that are being placed on management to ensure sucess it is essential to know that your retention of your staff is just as much a factor as is your employees retention of your customers. That doesn’t mean that there will be normal turn around but anything excessive and you have to address yourself as a manager and see what you are doing wrong. Certain things and tactics don’t work at some point and it is imperative to address those concerns before you end up with a staff that is completely new and wont help you with your own numbers.

I have been noticing certain organizations have been skimping on RAM when they install workstations. The lack of enough RAM in workstations can affect the overall performance of a workstation. This affect can also have an issue on network performance. Paging file is the windows way of increasing a workstations ram by providing “virtual ram”. This virtual ram increases the overall ram that windows can use. The issue with a workstation that has decreased ram and subsequent increased virtual ram is that hard drive access is generally much slower than RAM access. The process than becomes hard drive access to RAM to windows availability. This will in turn, decrease the speed of which a network resource is processed and therefore, decrease the availability of all network resources including the LAN. RAM plays a significant role in the overall performance of a workstation and is readdressed to different part of workstations tasks. Network Load balancing is a windows clustering mechanism that provides RAM to the network card based on network performance. An intensive use of resources can reduce the RAM that is available to CPU in workstations and therefore, reduce the amount of RAM that is available to network resources such as the network adapter and network load balancing in Windows. Please, ensure that your workstations have enough RAM so you don’t run into any issues with network performance or worker productivity
