I know…..I am referring to something that many of us fear the most. It is our lifestyle and basic necessities that ensure that we have a job to go to. Here is the problem….We are in an economic stress and the ones feeling it the most (as they normally do) are your subordinates (or if you are on the low end of the stick YOU!). What should you do? I think that people are less proactive when they have a job and go into emergency mode when they lose it. You should ensure that your resume is up to date. It doesn’t hurt if you are open with your managers about downsizing or possible layoffs and let them know that you are worried about the economy and is there something coming down. You will be surprised as your immediate managers may also have it in mind and could have an idea. Keep yourself open and honest and you will know when it is time to “get the boot” but you will be ready for it!

One of my good friends owns a shoe store and was asking me how he could increase foot traffic to his store. I told him that the location was okay but in order to get foot traffic he would need to provide some specials to the locals. Unfortunately, its a small mom and pop foot store and many people don’t know its a shoe store. Primarily, he is unable to compete with the larger stores but I told him the greatness is in numbers. Buy in bulk and sell cheap. He needs to setup to sell high quantity and make lower per shoe. I think he will take my advise and change his update.

The main reason why you should purchase products with ease of scalability because you, as a business owner, would like to eventually grow your business. That means that your single router, share point server, etc, etc wont work when you have more than a certain amount of users. The bigger concern is that as you grow, you will pay for all kind of fees for having more and more individuals on certain products. Lastly, you want to ensure that there is an adequate amount of payoff per employee which is vital when you have scalability.

I think that any of us who work in an office has heard the saying “setting up for failure”. There are actually two parts of that concern that will help ensure that you do not set anyone up for failure. The first part is to ensure that you setup a project for someone without going on and having that person take on an impossible task. That means that you need to ensure that you know all about a project. If you feel that you might be doing so, keep that in mind and ensure that it is lightly brought up when giving the project details. Secondly, you want to ensure that you don’t fail as a manager when you bring up the project details. The details can be detrimental so you want to be as detailed as possible. Think about anything that can be taken in multitudes and ensure it is made so that it can only be developed one day, every way.

The first concern for any manager or director is the lack of consistency of the requirements of your employee (not necessarily of the job because that can change depending on the type of position). You want to ensure that they are looking up to you as leaders and role models as well. Many times, it is tough to distinguish between a manager and an employee because they like to manage in such a way. I think that you will find that there is a thin line that you should not cross as a manager and it could be detrimental to your visibility as a manager. Notably, your employees will look up to you and you want to ensure that you do not make a bad impression. It is critical for a manager because it will let them know that there is a distinction and you, as a manager, are taking that higher path that they can achieve.

The best way to budget for your new business can be very challenging. Many times, small business owners do not have the know how to actually budget correctly. Here are the best ways to do so.

Think of a budget as an extension of your business. You want to make sure that your budget includes your goals and ensures correct progression

Start your budget through a REALISTIC sales target. Remember, if you don’t know or if you are new with no data, be conservative

Estimate your cost and ensure that there is nothing that you can see which will change your product cost and develop a gross margin

Be liberal of your variable and flexible expenses (gas) and ensure you know your fixed expenses. If it is a new organization, you may want to think about doing this over a second time half (or in quarters) through a businesses first year

Develop a realistic goal and stick to it. This includes the whole budget and ensure you can stick to it as much as possible. This will yield the most profit.

How to create a risk assessment? Many organizations (both large and small) run into this issue. It is a very complicated task but I will go over the basics of a risk assessment. In a risk assessment, the risks first need to be addressed. These risks include impacts associated with the areas of the organization related to security, auditing and disaster recovery. Identification should include tangible and intangible risks and impacts. The impacts should be quantified in terms of dollars from lost sales, property damage, increased expenses, etc. For each asset and function, you would need to identify existing threats or risks. The risk assessment will identify the approaches to be implemented for elimination of avoidable risks and the minimization of the risks that are unavoidable.
